In the presence of Anaïs Farine (researcher and programmer, FCP member) and Rami Nihawi (co-author and editor of “R21 aka Restoring Solidarity”) In 2023, at its closing ceremony in Paris, the FCP presented “R21 aka Restoring Solidarity”, a re-editing film by Mohanad Yaqubi based on a collection of twenty 16 mm films preserved in Tokyo. This event interweaves the screening of five short films from this collection, brought back into circulation thanks to the work of Subversive Film and the Palestine Film Institute, with moments of dialogue between Anaïs Farine and Rami Nihawi about these films, their histories and their resonance in today's struggles. Blown by the Wind by Jacques Madvo Lebanon | 1971 | 18 min | Documentary A series of vibrant drawings painted by Palestinian children are brought to life in "Blown by the Wind". The edited still images glimpse at their everyday lives, their memories and imagination following the Six-Day War in 1967. Scenes of the Occupation from Gaza by Mustafa Abu Ali Lebanon | 1973 | 13 min | Documentary A work created from a French news report about the Gaza Strip that Abu Ali re-edited, adding additional footage and a new commentary. This is the only film produced by the Palestinian Cinema Group, a large collective of filmmakers and artists that came together in 1973. The Urgent Call by Ismail Shammout Palestine | 1973 | 6 min | Experimental Written and sung by Zeinab Shaath, who accompanies herself on guitar, "The Urgent Call of Palestine" is a cry about the living conditions of Palestinians. Cowboy by Sami Al-Salamoni Egypt | 1973 | 15 min | Experimental “Cowboy” begins from American cinema, as an exposure of the country’s settler colonial structure and its ability to depict genocidal acts through camera framing. The film, directed by the renowned Egyptian film critic Sami Al-Salamoni, reflects his theoretical critique of Hollywood through heavily edited scenes and shots from mainstream motion pictures. Al-Salamoni manages to take the audience through the history of commercialised image production towards a transnational solidarity image production as a response. Palestine and Japan by T. Maki Japan | 1979 | 20 min | Documentary The film bridges the distance between Japan and Palestine and foregrounds the political links between the two countries. Made following the opening of the Palestine Liberation Organisation office in Tokyo, we are informed of the different solidarity networks in Japan. Reflections on the prospects of children in both countries form the lead to make statements about imperialisms, mutual understanding and the will to strengthen bonds.
