"Gaza yesterday, today, tomorrow" In response to current events, the Festival is opening its 10th edition with a tribute to Gaza, featuring stories from today as well as from the past. The aim of this tribute is to denounce the persistent violence that has hit the Gaza Strip since the blockade began in 2007, accentuated by the unprecedented genocide committed against its population since October 2023. Scenes of the Occupation from Gaza by Mustafa Abu Ali Palestine | 1973 | 13 min | Documentary A work created from a French news report about the Gaza Strip that Abu Ali re-edited, adding additional footage and a new commentary. This is the only film produced by the Palestinian Cinema Group, a large collective of filmmakers and artists that came together in 1973. Vibrations from Gaza by Rehab Nazzal Palestine, Canada | 2023 | 16 min | Documentary “Vibrations from Gaza” offers a glimpse into the experiences of deaf children in the colonized and confined coastal territory of Gaza, Palestine. Born and raised under siege and frequent onslaughts, these children, including Amani, Musa, Israa, and others, provide vivid accounts of their encounter, of bombardments and the constant presence of drones in their sky. The children describe their perceptions of missile strikes through sensing vibrations in the air, trembling of the ground, and the resonance of collapsing buildings. The film also questions whether the deafness of these children is natural or whether it is a consequence of Israel’s use of sonic weapons, such as sonic booms. Offing by Oraib Toukan Germany | 2021 | 28 min | Experimental What narratives escape the frame of war? How do struggle and desire coexist in the frame of war, and how do those undergoing the unfathomable stress of war, in turn, consume media? Offing was produced in the aftermath of the 2021 Israeli onslaught on Palestinians residing in the Israeli-besieged Gaza strip. It engages the personal stories of Gaza-based artist Salman Nawati, against footage shot by Toukan that focuses on the tender and the mundane as acts of life. But also, on the inadequacy of representing suffering.
