In the presence of filmmaker Mamoun Bonni and members of the Urgence Palestine collective SOME STRINGS: “The Cinema of Solidarity” France | 2024 | 4 min | Found footage & sound “The Cinema of Solidarity” is part of the Some Strings program, born of a painful legacy: that of Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike along with seven members of his family. His final poem, If I Must Die, written shortly before his death, calls for making a kite with “some strings.” This gesture becomes a symbol of resistance. Some Strings brings together around a hundred artists around this image — a multitude of perspectives on one of the defining tragedies of our time. The project is being shared widely across the world, in cinemas, festivals, and a wide range of spaces, so that everyone, in their own way, can hold onto a piece of string. Bonni is Syrian, he was close to Palestinian and Arab militants in Paris, as well as the Groupe Cinéma Vincennes, who contributed to the film’s production. The film pays tribute to the militants who were on "Golda’s list", targeted for assassination in Paris and in Europe, after the Palestinian Black September group attacked the Israeli sports team participating in the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. The film contains a very rarely filmed interview with Jean Genet. We called it ‘Video Tracts for Palestine’. It’s an old gesture, rooted in the tradition of the cine-tracts. ‘Video,’ because it is meant to be seen, shared, mostly on Instagram. A gesture made quickly, in urgency.” Director(s): Video Tract for Palestine (collective) Production: Video Tract for Palestine (collective)
