Conversation: Mohanad Yaqubi (director of R21 AKA Restoring Solidarity) with Rasha Salti (curator of the exhibition "Passé Inquiet: Musées, Exil et Solidarité") ; preceded by a screening of Palestine and Japan by T. Maki During their research in Japan, conducted for the purpose of elucidating connections previously unexplored for their documentary and archival exhibition, Past Disquiet, Kristine Khouri and Rasha Salti were accompanied by Mohanad Yaqubi. It was during this research trip that Prof. Aoe Tanami approached Mohanad after the screening of his film "Off Frame aka Revolution until Victory" at the Image forum cinema in Shibuya and informed him about a collection she holds in her family house in the outskirts of Tokyo. In 2019, Yaqubi and Salti traveled to Tokyo again, this time to retrieve the 16mm film reels and some posters from the Tanami San collection. Yaqubi had secured resources to restore and digitize the film reels and tapes. R 21 aka Restoring Solidarity is the first outcome of finding this archive, restoring it and exhibiting it again. While the sixth edition of the exhibition Past Disquiet is on view at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris until June 30th, 2024. This year, the FCP seeds the “Tokyo Reels” throughout its programming. Scenes of Occupation in Gaza, Palestine and Japan, Cowboy, The Urgent Call of Palestine and Scattered by the Wind - films recirculating thanks to the work of Subversive Film and the Palestine Film Institute - are presented in Marseille and in Paris. During this conversation, Mohanad Yaqubi and Rasha Salti will discuss the porosity of their projects, the complicity and solidarity they unearth, investigate and embody. They will revisit the circulation of images and imaginaries as well as the tribulations and how to make them visible again in the present. Palestine and Japan by T. Maki Japan | 1979 | 20 min | Documentary The film bridges the distance between Japan and Palestine and foregrounds the political links between the two countries. Made following the opening of the Palestine Liberation Organisation office in Tokyo, we are informed of the different solidarity networks in Japan. Reflections on the prospects of children in both countries form the lead to make statements about imperialisms, mutual understanding and the will to strengthen bonds.
