In partnership with the Toulouse Cinemathèque Prints from the Toulouse Cinemathèque This screening highlights the work of Samir Nimr, an Iraqi filmmaker and member of the Palestinian Film Unit, who has played a central role in the development of Palestinian activist cinema. The two films on the program, “The Revolution, for Whom?” and “The Winds of Liberation,” produced in solidarity with anti-imperialist struggles in Yemen and Oman, draw a common front stretching across the Arab world from Palestine. 🎤 Screening presented by Hugo Darroman (Ph.D. from Aix-Marseille University, specialist in film studies) THE REVOLUTION, FOR WHOM? (Liman al-Thaura) Iraq | 1974 | 24 min | Documentary In 1974, a delegation from the Palestinian Cinema Institution traveled to South Yemen, governed by the Yemeni Socialist Party. In Aden, the team of Palestinian filmmakers spent several days shooting without a predetermined project. The editing was carried out at a later stage, with a few additions, in order to present the Yemeni revolution. Director: Samir Nimr Production: Palestinian Cinema Institution THE WINDS OF LIBERATION (Riyh al-tahrir) Palestine | 1974 | 31 min | Documentary "The Winds of Liberation” chronicles the Dhofar rebellion against the British and Iranian armies, as well as against Sultan Qaboos of Oman and King Hussein of Jordan. Samir Nimr, an Iraqi filmmaker from the Palestinian Cinema Institution, masterfully captures the landscapes and people of Dhofar, illustrating the role of the Popular Front, the political, educational, and health gains achieved, as well as the military training and the involvement of Omani women in the fight alongside the men.
