As If No Misfortune Had Occured in the Night by Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind United Kingdom | 2022 | 21 min | Experimental As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night is a three-channel video work featuring an Arabic-language opera on loss, mourning and inherited trauma. A single aria is performed by Palestinian soprano Nour Darwish. The aria is a new composition by Lebanese composer Anthony Sahyoun, based on Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and the Palestinian traditional song Mashaal. Filmed in a derelict chapel, the opera is accompanied by archival material from Palestine and special effects. The piece is presented in black and white as a three-screen projection, like an altar triptych. 45th Parallel by Lawrence Abu Hamdan United Kingdom | 2022 | 15 min | Documentary A monologue is performed in a building that inhabits the thickness of a borderline, telling stories of permeable borders and impermeable laws, reflecting on how free movement, free knowledge and free space are under threat. Elefsina Notre Amour by Mahdi Fleifel Greece | 2023 | 9 min | Experimental Deserted landscapes, ancient ruins and abandoned shipwrecks at sea. Elefsina’s archeological sites don’t come close to being as hauntingly beautiful as these dead ships. They stand majestically like memorial sculptures and bring a magnetism to the eye. In fact, these are the neglected refugees of Elefsina. For how did they end up there, anyway? What's their story? That's the story I want to know. Elefsina Notre Amour is a short sci-fi essay, a timeless archive, filmed on 16mm color Kodak. Followed by a discussion with Mahdi Fleifel
